Custom work for an East Coast client, to hold his reproduction Viking Age edged weapons collection. The piece is inspired from the portable rowing benches used by Viking Age seafarers to hold their personal belongings while at sea.
In order to create a more dramatic stance, the legs have been scaled up in thickness. The chest was hewn from the trunk of a California Black Oak, which had been harvested from a tree that had been struck and felled by lightening.
The design chosen by the artist as ornamentation for the front of the chest is based on, and inspired by, the Urns Style Broach worn by women in the Late Viking Age."
