"Elements"

The inspiration of this sculptural manifestation is derived from one of three decorative roundels found on a church door from Valthjofsstadur, Iceland.  Dating from about 1200, it is one of the best known pieces in the National Museum of Iceland.  The pine carvings on the door roundels are low relief the carvings are approximately 3/8” in depth, the artist chose one of these roundel designs depicting four dragons interlaced, biting their own tails.  Each is identical, as may be seen by tracing their bodies from head to tail.

In representing this chosen design as contemporary sculpture, the artist has fashioned his roundel in the form of an independent disk, fabricated from a graft of American black and English blonde walnut, measuring 3’ in thickness with its design embellishment in high relief at 1’ in depth.  In drafting a design to act as the lower supporting element of the sculpture, the artist chose to incorporate segments of the roundels design, while striving to create the illusion of an elegantly flowing free standing body, embracing the top disk.  The artist chose basswood timbers finished with latex paint.
