"Lindholm Brooch"
Inspired by pictures from an excavation of a small silver Urns broach and buckle, found at Lindholm Hoje, Denmark in a former Viking settlement. The Urns Style was named after the wood of the church in Urnaes, Norway. The motif of this broach is believed to be a fantasy animal or perhaps a griffin fighting a serpent and is often interpreted as Christianity’s Battle Against the Serpent. Struck by the beauty of this broach, the artist chose to scale up its design and render it from a single large California redwood slab. Despite the artists’ extensive experience in the carving style known as “knot work” and interlacing of wood in carving, the knot work at the sculptures base or buckle segment resembling bound rope, proved to be a great challenge.
