"Odin's Dream"
Inspired by a Viking Age rune stone from Gotland, Sweden, the artist chose to render this sculpture from a modified design of the original stone, demonstrating what may be Oden drinking from a cup or horn in one hand and holding a bucket of the source of the liquid in the other, while seated. Framing Oden is two stylized dragons, with the suggestion of rune-style writing in straight line bars embellishing their bodies. The suggestion of dragons rising up and intertwining around Oden’s body as if floating, suggested to the artist’s wife a vision or dream state. The sculpture was rendered from one California redwood slab that the artist has described as the most exquisite piece of rare birds-eye burl he has ever sculpted.
