The sleigh carving is inspired from the elaborate carvings found on the sleighs of the Oseberg find in Norway. The runners of the sleighs were made from oak and the bodies of beech wood. The original carving was so elaborate that it was painted to make it more intelligible.
The artist chose to render his inspired vision of the original in a richly colored California Redwood birds-eye burl carving. The completed sculpture is now in the private collection on an Icelandic-Canadian collector in Canada.
