"Slepnir"

This commissioned work was inspired from the top panel of a memorial stone from Alskog, Tjangvide, Gotland, Denmark.  The artist modified the design to frame Oden riding Slepnir while holding a cup of what may be mead, an alcohol made of honey.  Grapes do not grow in the Scandinavian climate, so mead was the chief spirit consumed by the Norse.

The sculpture base is embellished with the knot associated as the symbol of Oden.  Slepnir, in Viking mythology, was the mighty eight legged horse of Oden who carried him through the sky and never tired.

Commissioned by the Heidrun Meadery of Arcata, California, who produce a modern verson of the ancient mead.  The artist fashioned this 16" tall redwood bird’s-eye burl sculpture based on their bottle label design of Oden riding Slepnir from the same stone in Denmark, to act as a promotional table exhibit at the company’s frequent functions.
